Project Financial Evaluation

Project Financial Analysis

Correct Project Financial Analysis requires you to think outside the box. If you are afraid to question the norm you will never build beyond the now.

“Do you pump water over the hill, build a channel around the hill, dig a tunnel through the hill, or do nothing?”

The problem

When deciding whether to undertake a project, what factors influence your decision?

Ideally you should carry out a share analysis for the past 5 years. However, it is not practical and sometimes not even possible to do so. Luckily, as the saying goes there’s more than one way to skin a cat!

The answer is Financial Evaluation, the practical application of using the value of the asset to make or break the project.

The Academy Project Financial Evaluation sets out the framework as well as covering the fundamentals required to assess whether to take on a project.

What am I going to learn?

This refresher course covers the basic principles of project option analysis using financial tools. You will learn how to evaluate project options that have the same end result, for example, analysis of Contractors methodologies in proposals. The key accounting principles refreshed are:

  • Depreciation
  • Time value of money (discounting)
  • Net Present Value (NPV)
  • Internal Rate of Return (IRR)
  • Investment decision & Cost of Capital
  • Financial report structure (profit and loss statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement)
  • Ratio analysis

The above will help you apply your knowledge to management decision making from a financial perspective within construction organisations.

“The course was excellent and I find it hard to believe just how much I learned about a subject that I thought I knew a lot about.”

“You are a top quality lecturer; you have taken one of my weakest subjects and made it one of the best.”

“As a main contractor who is based on-site, this course has allowed me to understand what goes on behind the scene.  It is like someone turning on a light and being able to see the whole picture, not just a small area.”

Why choose The Academy Project Financial Evaluation?

It’s enjoyable!

This course is taught in a “frighteningly different” manner. Last year one of Lara’s students (thankfully not from The Academy) was so overwhelmed by the level of classroom interaction she literally ran out in fear! Lara loves teaching through sharing experiences and is a firm believer of Ako and the learner/teacher reciprocity. Be prepared to be engaged.

Immediately applicable…

This is not accounting! This course is tailored for the construction industry and the learning is married with practical situations.

Designed for you…

Contractors, consultants and clients who need to evaluate options that provide the same outcome, for example those that need to evaluate construction methodologies in RFP’s from a financial standpoint.

War stories shared…

The course value is demonstrated through real industry examples, where you are encouraged to share your personal experiences.

Presented by an industry leader…

The tutor, Lara Tookey, uses real case studies selected from his direct industry experience to provide a strong practical context for the module.

After qualifying as a professional Quantity Surveyor, Lara moved into project and construction management. Lara has worked in South Africa, Singapore, UK and NZ. Her Career begun with managing the Merton Estates and Sunsets links urban developments, her responsibilities included evaluating tenant mix, bridging options and land use analysis – all this giving her a strong base in viability evaluation.
For the last XXX years Lara has been employed at UNITEC Auckland lecturing in YYY. She has been nominated by her students for the 2015 NZ Tertiary Teaching Excellence Awards.
